Secret Garden Splendour

I received a pretty parcel in the post recently from a dear friend of mine Vera from
She loves to surprise me with pretty scrap booking supplies from her business

I was super happy when the postman handed me the box and I took a peek inside.
Aunty Vera knows me very well.
She knew that I would be squealing with delight.

I thought you would all love to take a peek too !

These gorgeous papers are from the 'Secret Garden' collection.
She has lots in stock right now so pop over and tell her that you are a friend of mine. She is a real sweetheart and she will look after you.

I had something special in mind to make with them when I saw them. I decided to make some pretty gift tags to attach to my flower orders for Mothers Day.
They are so pretty and soft and Mums would love them.
Well this Mum (me) loves them especially !

These are my tags complete !
I love the one on top the best because I LOVE Forget-me nots
Didn't I get spoilt !
Lucky me :-)

You will find these papers HERE

I love to make things when special occasions arise. There is nothing nicer then a home made card to say 'I love you Mum'
and then I made something quite neutral and brown into the perfect greeting for my tea cup posies.
They are quick and easy to make and allow my blooms to be the star and not the card.
They may be boring brown but they look really effective don't you think ?
a dab of hot glue stuck my little flags on to a simple skewer.
Simple but just right.

no it's not your eyes..........this next pic IS blury.
But you get the idea of where my little flags ended up !

and the birthday girl was very happy when I delivered her little teacup full of happiness. It is such a gift in itself to hand somebody flowers and seeing their face light up.

Thursday Flowers......Boho Style

It all began with a big bucket of flowers that inspired a whole room change.
I was passing by my local florist store and decided to stop in and buy my daughter a bunch of flowers for her birthday......

My daughter (as mentioned in Mondays post HERE) isn't a shabby chic girl at all. She prefers a more Boho look and loves  Indian textiles and raw timber surfaces.  Combining her look with my look in our home has often proved to be quite the challenge.
I have in the past snuck a frilly cushion or a rose inspired print into her room, but as soon as she locks eyes on it is is back out of her room as quick as a flash.

When buying her flowers, roses and violets and other delicates are just not her thing.

So on my venture into the florist on the day of her birthday, I stood there scratching my head about what I would create for her.

It didn't take long to be inspired. Buckets and buckets of flowers sat before me and I was straight away drawn to a big bucket of fushia coloured  Dahlias. These pretty blooms didn't know it yet but they had inspired a whole new room change.
I used reds and creamy white Alstromeria to compliment the Dahlias. I needed some smaller blooms to soften the hues and the florist didn't have a lot in stock because it was straight after Christmas.  Hesitantly I reached for a bunch of Babies Breath. Babies Breath wasn't quite the look that I was after but I knew that it would help to fill the space.
I found nice tall native blooms in the shade of mauve. (I have no idea what they are called as the assistant who served me wasn't sure).  I didn't use these blooms in my arrangement but I knew that they would look big and dramatic in a new tall cylinder tin that I had been recently given as a gift.

I began with a couple of floral foam florist balls.  I soaked them for a few minutes until they were completely absorbed with water.
I then cut the heads off my flowers and began to fill my foam ball with them. I left a short stem of about 5cm on the end of each flower head and poked it into the ball.  I evenly spaced the larger blooms Dahlias all around the ball and then followed with a different shade and variety of Dahlias.  Then I began to fill in the gaps with creamy white Alstromerias and Babys Breath.
By the end of the process I realised that I had not bought nearly enough blooms for 2 balls.
I guess it is a learning curve and next time I will buy more !
I had wondered about hanging my ball up but in the end I decided to sit it on top of a round glass vase filled halfway with water and used the fallen petals to float in the vase.

and my arrangement is complete !

If you decide to try this at home, don't throw away the tighly closed buds because they add texture and interest to your design. Nothing from your bunches should be wasted unless the flowers are damaged or discoloured.

My daughter adored her flowers when she came home and saw them bursting with colour in her bedroom.  The smile and hug that she gave me made it all worth it.  Somehow I had managed to please her teenage eye with something that she may have selected for herself.  Dahlias are such a pretty old fashioned flower but in her eyes they were Bohemian, fresh and very hip !

A Thoughtful Christmas Gift......DO NOT READ THIS IF YOU ARE MY MUM !

Giving is one of those precious things.
To give with an open heart and a smile fills ones life with joy

When I have a special occasion to give someone a gift I try to think about what the person loves.
I love the thought of giving the gift of creativity to my receiver. Something that will make the receiver feel good and give them a sense of accomplishment and for them to know that I really did think about what gift I have chosen.
Even the toughest to buy for can be easily satisfied.
Just think for a moment what the person really loves to do in his/her life.
Do they love to walk along the beach ?  Can you collect some pretty shells and hand make a shell mobile for them ?

Bake a traditional fruit cake for your Grandparents.  They more than likely will tell you that they don't need anything for Christmas but I bet they would adore something that you took the time to make for them. A batch of pickles or preserves perhaps ?

Does your loved one enjoy the countryside ? Maybe create a  treasure hunt for them for around the countryside. Give them clues and things they have to find or see. Perhaps have their photo taken with a cow etc. and pack them a picnic basket full of gourmet foods that you have made for them.
I did this for my children a few years ago now and they never forgotten the fun day that we had and they still even remember what their clues were !
It's about creating special memories.

There are so many options, so for those of you who are stuck for ideas, think about gifts from the heart. I bet that a gift from the heart will not only be warmly received but it will also never be forgotten.

This Christmas I really wanted to give my beautiful Mum something that would help her relax and unwind after a long year.
She is forever doing things for everybody else so I thought that it was important for her to do something nice for herself.
On a recent trip to the countryside I found a beautiful store selling Alpaca wool.  There were beautiful handmade goodies all through the store, anything from woollen jumpers to scarves to toys. It would have been easy to buy her something already made but when I picked up a big fluffy scane of white Alpaca wool I just  knew that I had to buy her the wool and she could knit something beautiful for herself.  Just touching this divine wool is so pleasurable and I can just imagine my Mum sitting by the fire this Winter knitting something beautiful with her wool. Half of the fun of receiving this wool will be deciding what lovely thing she will create with the wool.

Presentation of a gift is everything. Even the simplest of gifts can be made beautiful with small touches.
My Mum shared her love of lace with me so I wanted to wrap her gift up with lace !

I found a beautiful lace tea cloth in an antique store for her and wrapped her wool up with it. I pack it all up in a simple white gift box, overlapped the edges of the cloth and tied a simple bow with some more lace of a different colour.
A pair of vintage knitting needles were spruced up with some of the matching lace that I tied the present up with.

Remember it is not what you give but how you give it.
Always give with love and thoughtfulness

Childrens Christmas Craft Angels

I really love inspiring children to make crafts.
When opening up to creativity, children become open to many possibilities.  It becomes an experience a lot more deeper than just making something pretty or just having a bit of fun.
It encourages them to be aware of their own creative ability. A realisation about making different decisions and seeing a different outcome.  When you really think about it, there is so much to learn through art. It can truly enhance a child's confidence and give them a feeling of worthiness from exploring their own minds and what they are capable of.

After many years of both having my own children and also working with children I have seen for myself many different faces of creativity.
I worked in disabilities for many years and even a child with severe handicaps can  shine and be proud of his/her artistic channels whether it be a scribble on a simple colouring in page or the most amazing works from a child who excels in arts and crafts.

A lot of boys (mine included) do not and simply will not enjoy arts and crafts. It is always my greatest challenge to awaken these children to realise that there is a craft for anybody at all in this wonderful world of opportunity.
One year I was taking a craft class in one of my boys classes. I was teaching an Easter craft and was standing to one side of the room with my big green basket full of goodies waiting for the class to return from lunch. As the children walked in to the classroom, I could literally feel the sighs that were itching to come out of the boys mouths from the thought of being bored to the brain for the afternoon while Mrs S was smiling from ear to ear with excitement and bursting at the seams to begin.
It is in these moments when I accept the boy (and girl too) challenge to see a creative spark or 2.
The boys had expected to be sat in a chair and begin tying ribbons or colouring in but they found themselves out in the garden potting up soil, planting 'bunny grass' in a small terracotta pot and popping a little wooden skewer stick with Easter greeting stuck to it, into the pot telling the Easter Bunny that this grass was for him to eat !
They were surprised that they were not going to be sitting down being bored. Instead they were doing something fun and entertaining. Whilst working with them, I shared stories of the Easter Bunny and old folklore tales that have slowly been forgotten in today's school system.
In a nutshell, I brought the magic back into the classroom and even the biggest of cynics lining up to pot their bunny grass found their little minds ticking over with wonder.
It is all in the delivery !
There is nothing better then a big lump of clay for any little boy to get his hands stuck into to calm him down and let his mind wander off into the land of creation.

It is something that I have always encouraged in my own children.
My daughter was 3 months old and we were visiting the local library for story time.  I would often sit there with her and read out aloud about fun things to make or do and over the years she has come to enjoy reading and lots of different crafts.
My boys were more difficult to engage, but play dough and creating mud castles in the garden would keep them amused for hours.
Toys are very overrated.
There are very few toys over the years that have kept my children occupied for very long at all.
Pushing little toy cars around with their fingers was very short lived, creating lego masterpieces lasted a little longer, but most of the time I would find them asking for play dough, sand to build with or kicking a ball around.

When my little nieces arrived in the world I loved spoiling them as all Aunties do, but I have always longed for the day when they were old enough to begin dress ups, do craft or simply play make believe.
So when 2 of my little nieces visited for the day over the weekend we opened Aunty Mely's craft box and got straight to work.
We had decided to make little Christmas angels for the tree.  We made quite a few of them for special people and I was even lucky enough to get one for my Christmas tree (signed and dated of course so it would always remind me of our special day together).

I have had these little print outs saved for quite a while and I honestly do not remember where I found them on the Internet but I am sure that if you look around then you will find the free download to make something similar.  If anybody out there knows where to find it please let me know so that I can share it with you all.

We used a simple bust of an old Victorian dolly. I printed out a pageful for the girls. We glued the paper dolls on to a sheet of cardboard and we cut them out and coloured them in with coloured pencil (using texta colours would have run and given too strong a look for the desired soft look that we were after).
I had to take over at this point and hot glue gun little squares of tulle (that we had recycled from some packing from a pair of pj's......I love recycling !) onto the waist of our paper doll. The hot glue gun is definitely not safe for little fingers to use, so if you try this at home please be careful and do not allow a child to ever use a hot glue gun.  I have had severe blistering on my fingertips from hot glue guns (ouchy !)
Over that, I glued a tiny lace bow to make the skirt prettier and to hide the gluey mess under it..  A hole punch through the dolly's forehead (ouch !)  gave us a place to tie our ribbon so that it could be tied to the tree.

The girls were thrilled with their creations and couldn't wait to give them away.
Miss A smiled from ear to ear as she hung the one that they had made for me on our tree.
She is such a cutie !

Scroll down and you will see our works of art !

Miss A was so happy with herself !

We spent a lovely hour together making these sweet little angels, the receivers of the angels were all happy with their gifts and most of all we had lots of fun together creating.
