The Sweet Little Town Of Berry

and so it continues.....
My trip to the beautiful little coastal community of Berry in NSW Australia was both picturesque and delightful as far as my taste buds were concerned.
Whilst strolling up the quaint little main street we happened across the most divine little bakery.
It looked as good as it smelt too with it's yummy sourdough bread, croissants cooling on a rustic shelf and delectable cakes.
It wasn't quite time for lunch yet but we knew that we would be back to splurge on something yummy. Rumour had it that they served the best sourdough bread around and the chocolate brownies behind the glass counter had our mouth buds watering.
The staff were so friendly and welcoming and were a credit to their employer. Nothing was a trouble to them and they were aways smiling which is always a true sign of a healthy wonderful workplace as far as I am concerned.
This sweet bakery is online too. You will find them HERE

There was a very cool bright orange bike out the front with loaves of crusty bread sticks gracing it's basket. (It had to have a photo of course !)

Later in the day we headed back to this beautiful bakery and this is what we bought.....mmmmmm

The chocolate brownie was superb......if only it was close enough to buy more !
Wandering down the bustling street we saw a cow !!!
Obviously the paddocks had him bored and he wanted some company.
Maybe the smell of the lattes coming from the cafes enticed him ?
I spotted a couple of these old vintage doggy charity boxes in the main street. They were very old and worn but they brought back such beautiful childhood memories. I just loved 'feeding' these doggies money when I was a little girl. You just never see these around anymore !
This store was absolutely beautiful !
It was packed with exquisite home wares, soaps, linens and lamps.
It's delightful owner was lovely to speak with and she was very helpful with fun things to do around the area where we were staying.
I bought some really lovely French gift tags from her with botanical vegetables on them. (I'll share them later)
What really drew my eye in this little town were the shop signs. They were old fashioned swinging signs that hung above their stores. They weren't your modern day flurescent sign with lights flashing like beacons, they were sweet and charming and I really loved the calmness of them.
The names of the stores and the gentle designs of the graphics led one into the store to explore further.
and then it was time for lunch !
After spending so much time wandering around we ran out of time to eat. We wanted something yummy that wouldn't take lots of time to make. We settled on yummy gourmet sandwiches from
'The Emporium'.
We sat in the window seat and watched the world go by.
We munched on our sandwiches and drank coffee and tea and chatted about where we would head to next. We had only an hour left and I still wanted to walk through the back streets of Berry to see the beautiful country cottages and gardens.

and this sweet childrens book caught my eye for a bloggy friend of mine !
I just knew that she would love it's title.
(You will have to buy this book Miss Pom Pom !)

The rest of the afternoon sped by.
We chatted and laughed and explored.
The gardens and cottages were beautiful !
I spent time with my sweet friend, ate delicious food and strolled through so many wonderful stores.
What a glorious day !

Tomorrow on FRENCH BLUE AND PEACHY PINK I will share some of the gardens and flowers with you all and on Friday I will share my vintage and antique finds !
I picked up some beautiful treasures so be sure to  come back and see.

See you all tomorrow !

Vintage Recipe......Nan's Lemon Sago Pudding

My Nan is a beautiful cook.
Everything she touches in the kitchen turns into gold.
Rarely does she buy a packet of biscuits or buys a cake. For as long as I have walked the earth she has always made her own.
As a child, a weekend visit to Nan and Pop's house would have me walking straight in their front door, a quick kiss on the cheek followed by a trip to the kitchen to see what smelt so good.
The cake tins were always full, the biscuit jar overflowing and there was always a jelly or a pudding of some description setting in the fridge.
Today I am going to let a secret out of the bag and share one of my nan's recipes.
LEMON SAGO PUDDING

It is simple, delicious and will have your taste buds dancing with delight !

You will need these ingredients
and this is how
The ingredients are simple and apart from the tapioca seeds (sago) you should find most everything already in your kitchen pantry.

Be sure to soak your sago for an hour in boiling water as recipe requires.
When you tip water and sago into the saucepan it may be lumpy.  I find the lumps are easily stirred out or maybe a gentle whisk should do the trick.
Add the ingredients and stir.
Follow the easy recipe and you be fine !

When cooked, pour into a bowl, cool and set in fridge.
I love to eat mine while it's warm !
mmmmmmm
Add a scoop of ice cream....
and I bet the bowl will be finished in no time !
YUM !!

So if you fancy a spot of cooking over the weekend, try this delicious recipe.  It is always a welcome sight in my kitchen. My kids love it !

So it's bye for now from the kitchen of
                     FRENCH BLUE AND PEACHY PINK

I am going to take my lemon sago pudding and ice cream and put my feet up and watch a movie.

Have a fun weekend and I'll see you all next week !

How To Crystallise Rose Petals

On the weekend we celebrated my Mum's 'special birthday'. Turning 60 is a milestone so I thought I would make an extra special effort and make her a birthday cake myself.
After baking 3 yummy layers of butter cake I decided on a white chocolate ganache fondant topped off with crystallised rose petals picked fresh from my rose garden.

I searched the net for a guide and found the perfect instructions from Martha Stewart . As always she is a constant wealth of information and her recipes are tried and true.
Click on the link for her instructions.

In the morning I selected a few rose heads and buds from my 'Iceberg Seduction' rose bush.  I soaked the heads and buds in water removing any unwanted guests and dirt. My roses are organic and chemical free so they were perfect to use. Chemically sprayed roses are not suitable due to poisoning risks.
I then dissected the rose petals and laid them out flat on a clean towel to dry them off.
After a few hours I began my crystallising process.

I began by using 1 egg white diluted by a couple of drops of water.
Using a brand new paintbrush I carefully painted each rose petal both back and front with the egg white and then carefully using a pair of tweezers, I sprinkled castor sugar over each petal.
It was a long and slow process but well worth the trouble.

After completing each  petal I laid them carefully on a sheet of baking paper, covered them with another sheet of baking paper and left them for 8 hours to dry out.
I would suggest leaving them overnight but due to time cons taints I had no choice but to use them then.
They looked amazing but some were still a little wet.
Martha suggested that they keep for up to 12 months when stored in a sealed container.

It was much easier to crystallise each individual petal however I wanted to include a bloom or 2 and some buds on my cake so I crystallised this whole flower head as well.

Each petal was painted in egg white and sprinkled with sugar and laid out flat on a baking paper lined tray to dry.

Don't they look just so pretty ?
I plan on making a lovely big container of them next Spring when my first flush of roses come out. A mixture of different colour pinks would look stunning !

All in all, it was time consuming and fiddly but I loved the final outcome so I would definitely do it again.  You need patience and a steady hand but the results speak for themselves.

                          See you all tomorrow

Garden Day Crafts

On the weekend I held a garden day for friends and family to purchase gifts for Mothers Day approaching this weekend coming.

On the top of my list for things to make were cards.
To me, cards are such a personal way of greeting somebody for their birthday or any other special day.  It is a once a year opportunity to tell them how wonderful they are or how much you love them. Little words that mean the world to the receiver.

I used a combination of card stock, vintage lace and tulle, glitter from Aunty Vera Scrap and Craft and paper flowers from a dollar store.

Then I began to sew and sew and sew and sew.........

Bunting flags, pretty aprons using vintage doilies, pin cushions, garden stakes and my new range of jewellery (I will share that with you in the coming weeks)

and then came the cupcakes......
delicious vanilla cupcakes with pink rose water frosting

Pretty pots of roses.........I'll be sharing pics of those tomorrow
My Great Grandmothers famous recipe for choko pickles made jar upon jar of happiness

It was a fun filled day !
with lots of friendly, smiling faces stopping by to say hello.

Pop in and say hi tomorrow

My 'Thursday Flowers' segment will surely put a smile on your face.
