Look What the Mailman Delivered Today

A rainy, miserable day began on a lovely note when I heard the rat a tat of the delivery man knocking on my front door.  With a smile he held out a lovely white box marked for "French Blue and Peachy Pink".  We were running a little late but I couldn't help but take time to open it as I could see it was from  Aunty Vera Scrap and Craft.
So this is what I discovered inside my parcel......Thankyou, Thankyou, Thankyou !!

I love the beautiful duck egg blue and chocolate brown tones, and mirror decals. The  Victorian style rub ons are so lovely.   These lovely items are not only great for scrapbooking an album, but also for card making and decorating other craft projects.  Imagine a plain, white blank card, cover the front of the card in scraps of white lace and glue gun one of the pretty mirror decals in the middle of the lace.

Cards have become quite expensive to buy so stocking up on a few sheets of scrapbooking paper and some other decorative trims and stickers allows you to make your own at a fraction of the cost.

A Handful of Pretty Scraps

It's amazing what can be achieved with bits and pieces from your scrap bag.  Most sewers out there will know just how many little scraps of ribbon, trims and fabrics can be accumulated.  We all tend to save them because they are too pretty to throw away and our stash can become quite plentiful.
This pretty creation was very easy and it was whipped up in no time at all.

  1.  I took 2 photocopied pages of  music sheets, stitched up 3/4 of it around the edge giving  a 3cm hem with quite a large zigzag stitch in pink.
  2. I then stuffed a small amount of tissue paper inside the heart and carefully stitched up the remaining edge until it was all sealed.
  3.  I then sewed some pretty tulle trim that I had  (you could use lace as well) around the hem line.
  4.  I stitched a  scrap of pink pompom trim across the bottom of the heart and used adhesive squares from a scrapbooking supplier to stick down my cute little baby ballerina.
  5. I added a ribbon hanger and glue gunned 2 white feathers at the top.
  6. I added a pretty mirror from  http://www.auntyverascrapandcraft.com.au/  to the top of the heart for some more detail.  I love these little mirror decal stick ons, they are so pretty and I know my little niece will love seeing her reflection in them when she's a little older.  A little detail goes a long way in craft.
It was simple and took 1/2 hour to create.  A pretty piece like this could be used in place of a birthday card and the special someone that you give it too would love the thought and effort that went into making it.
You could even use newspaper or sheets of wrapping paper. Very cost effective and we all have these things lying around.
Think twice before you visit your craft store because we can all find bits and pieces lying around that will make something gorgeous and even better it will save time and money. Use your creative imagination !

You will find the little mirror decals and other gorgeous papers and scrapbooking supplies at  http://www.auntyverascrapandcraft.com.au/
Vera has such a pretty range, take a look at her website and see for yourself. Let your imagination run wild...

Tales From a Fairy Godmother......

Once upon a time a little angel was born into the world. She was blessed with grace and fell straight into the arms of a loving family.  She was given a beautiful name to go with her sunny disposition and enchanted any person who should stray upon her path.

One day, the little angel's Mummy and Daddy asked  a special person to be Godmother for their little darling.
Heart beating excitedly the Godmother readily accepted her new role in this child's life. She felt that this little angel was part of her, this little one was an old soul, she was sure that they had met before in another time.  The connection that Godmother and angel shared was truly precious. They made each other smile and cuddles made them both happy.  The Christening day arrived and there was much excitement. All were dressed in their finest and laughter filled the air. Blessings were given, people were smiling and love was all around.

The proud parents began their walk down the aisle with their baby daughter. Many were looking on with joy. The Godmother looked on happily at her little Godaughter.  She wondered what great things this little person would achieve in her life. She knew that she would be there holding her hand along the way and watching her blossom. The little angel turned around and smiled at her  Godmother. The Daddy said "Would you like to hold her?".  "Of course'" replied the happy Godmother.
They both shared a smile,a warm embrace and happily walked out into the world.

There was endless love, plenty of cuddles, pink cake and way too many photo's.
and they both were living happily ever after
I love you little angel

Baby Shower Favours.......Pretty Nests of Love

I held a baby shower for my dear sister in law late last year and I decided on a sweet little nest theme. Each guest took home a nest with a tiny note of thanks.  I had tables set with pretty white lace tablecloths and had a sheet of music on each table topped with a little nest and fresh white flowers.

Wish upon a star.....dreams really do come true

Love is..... A Friend

Once upon a time there were two young girls. They met at school, shared a close bond and enjoyed each others company. These girls were not only best friends but soul mates who knew each others thoughts and feelings. They instinctively knew if each other were feeling worried or pain.
These two stuck together through thick and thin and felt as if each other had been created to be life's sounding board. Any problem could be sorted out and there was always an open door to each another's homes.

The friends spent much of their time together giggling.
They spent many wonderful hours drinking great coffee in their favorite cafe's and shopping in gorgeous little gift stores.
They would garden together, taking turns to go to each other's homes and always with a smile.
Distance separated them but a thought always took them straight away into each others heart and mind and comfort would be found.
A love of singing constantly had them in fits of laughter and hairbrushes often turned into microphones. Onlookers would look on in amusement but the friends only saw joy.
Times sometimes got tough but they were always by each others side waiting to lend a hand.

True friends are blessings from the angels.
To my friend who is more like a sister
I love you
May life always make you smile, the same as you always make me smile

Sweet, Sweet Slumber.....sshhhhh

Big fluffy pillows, a warm snuggly quilt and a great book equals LOVE !  On a cold night it's a great place to be. I love fresh, crisp white linens that smell of sunshine. Scatter a few pretty cushions and drape a pretty throw rug on the end of the bed and it creates a little form of heaven. A hot cup of tea in a pretty cup and a pretty candle burning on the bedside table completes the scene.

This pretty bed can be found in a little corner of Shabby Sheilas Store

Vintage Sewing Pretties

Antique and vintage sewing items are so much fun to collect.  I just love to hit the antique shops and browse to my hearts content buying pretty buttons, gorgeous old laces, pieces of pretty fabrics or doilies to create something stunning.  My favourite finds are always cutoffs from beautiful antique nightdresses. The lacework on these old castaway nightdresses are always so fine and intricate. A beautiful cuff or a sleeve can be cut up and used to trim pretty cushions. Use scraps of antique lace to trim a plain white singlet top for Summer.
Waste nothing and create everything, it's amazing what pretty scraps can be turned into.
Sew doilies together to create a pretty throw or a plain white pillowcase can be trimmed with pretty lace for a new look.
Don't forget to buy some vintage cottons, often a fraction of the price of a new reel.
I love this display of vintage sewing bric a brac at Ambleside Cottage.

Tea cup collection....mixing old with new

When I set a pretty table for an afternoon tea, I always bring out my beautiful Victorian tea set. The china is so fine and delicate and beautiful to drink from. I often mix it with  my white Royal Albert tea set and the two combined work really well together. The beauty of china is that it can easily be mixed and matched, just colour coordinate your pieces.  I find a fresh white tablecloth sets off pretty floral dishes and if you have a plain white tea set try using a pretty floral tablecloth.

So That's What Little Boys are Made of !

What are little boys made of ?
Frogs and snails and puppy-dogs' tales,
and that's what little boys are made of.....

Once upon a time a tiny little boy arrived into this big, wide world. He was impatient and unable to wait for his impending delivery date, for he had much to do and see and he was way too excited to remain in the warmth of his mother's womb.
His mother was dining out with her best friend and afterwards had decided to watch a lovely long movie at the cinema. His mother became aware of the impending birth but was determined to see the end of the movie. Little do I say but the end of the movie came and a visit to the hospital became apparent.  The best friend promised to meet the young mum at the hospital and the young dad was quickly ushered to the car. A little soul was about to arrive on the earth. A little treasure from above.

Well from the minute this little soul arrived, he brought much joy to his parents hearts. His mother was elated and very much in love with her beautiful new baby. She felt such love for him and wished him a happy life full of love and laughter. She had been blessed.

The baby boy grew into a young man who was smart and funny and very charming. He had a handsome face and always made his mother feel very special. They had a strong connection and knew each other well. There was much laughter between them but more importantly love. Love between a mother and her son.
The mother is still watching this young man grow, but she wishes him all the best that life has to offer. He will achieve many great things in his life and she would be standing there beside him, watching on  with pride

and they are still living happily ever after.

I love this cherry red display I found at Ambleside Cottage on the weekend. Red is such a great colour for boys rooms to brighten things up. French Blue and Red is a great combination and will suit boys of all ages. Bright bunting flags hung across the room gives a fun element too. Enjoy this while it lasts though, as years of posters on the wall creep up on you before you know it and the years of teddy bears will have left you forever.

Love in a Biscuit.....another Random Act of Kindness

Once upon a time, a young woman walked through the streets of a big city. It was rainy and cold and all who had braved the weather that day were rugged up in Winter coats and warm scarves.  The young woman was on her way to a delicious lunch in an inner city eatery. She was well dressed in a long chocolate coloured dress and beautiful Italian leather heels that she had  spent half a weeks wages on. She loved the way the heels clicked against the footpath as she rushed to her lunch date, the new shoes were well worth the money, she thought to herself.

She had only a short block to go until she reached her destination when she noticed a beautiful old theatre which was  decadently lit up on such a cold, dreary day. She wondered what production may have been playing and looked towards the front foyer of the building for a poster advertising shows.
In a second, all thoughts of a show were gone, for she viewed one of the saddest sights she would ever see.
An elderly, homeless man was lying on the cold concrete floor outside the theatre doors. He was huddled in the corner with a dirty old blanket over him. He appeared to be asleep and had no possessions to call his own.

A little tug pulled on the heart of the young girl.  She felt pity for the man and wondered what card life had dealt  to him to see him like this.  He could be somebody's grandfather or father. Why wasn't he warm at home in front of a fire, watching tv  ?  Was there somebody in the world who loved him ?
The young girl seemed to slow up in her steps, a vision of grey had been etched into her mind.

She reached her destination, enjoyed lunch with her friend and engaged in idle chit chat.  She  then strolled around the store admiring decadent biscuits and teas imported from England. There were delicious jams and pickles made locally and packaged up into oh so pretty  gingham boxes with bows.  Beauty surrounded her and the smell of  rich food filled filled the air.

All the while,  she held the same grey thought in her head, it sent shivers down her spine. The rain was beating up against the shopfront and people were rushing to stand under what little cover was offered.  The poor old man was out there in this weather and would likely remain there the whole night.
This world was a mixed up, muddled up place sometimes.
The girl felt a warmth of love towards the man. She didn't know his story, but whatever it was, nobody deserved to live like that.

Compassion in her heart, she walked towards a counter in the store that was selling freshly baked biscuits.. She ordered a big bag of shortbread hearts and cream filled biscuits and breathed in their lovely smell.  A hot cup of coffee finished the order and she walked up the stairs and out of the store.
It was freezing outside and she walked hurriedly towards the train station.
Lights from the theatre were approaching and she wondered if maybe the old man had moved on to a warmer place. Sadly as she approached, she saw that this was not the case.

A smile and a warm greeting raised the old man's suspicions. He slowly sat up with caution on his face. Was this a kind visit or another mouthful of abuse from passers by who had judged him for his ways. He was tired, cold and never touched a drop of alcohol, unlike many of his friends. His story was a sad one, he kept his woes to himself, his problems were just his own. He felt no need to burdon others.

He looked up into smiling warm eyes and an outstretched hand. "Excuse me sir, I thought you might like something to warm you up !"

The two strangers regarded each other. They each felt no threat and only a moment of friendship.

"Thankyou Miss," came the raspy old reply. "God bless you !".
The man held the warm coffee to his chest to warm himself.  The bag of heart shaped cookies was safely on his lap and a smile had washed across his face.
Today was a great day, an angel had found him and touched him on the shoulder.  There was a ray of hope.
Hope was all he had in his life. Love had long since left him and he was all alone in the world.
He looked up to say goodbye but the new friend had left, she wanted no thanks, she had given her gift of warmth and wanted nothing in return .

The young woman quickly walked away. She felt new compassion in her heart, she had learnt not to judge. Judgement is not what the world needed. Love was within every person on the planet and if everybody showed just one Random Act of Kindness towards each other, then the world would be a happier place.
She had not saved the man, but she had sewn a thread of hope into his heart. Maybe, just maybe, he would find his way to warmth tonight.

A Peachy Pink Story.....

Once upon a time a dainty woman donned her prettiest hat, put her pink gloves on and walked to the store to buy a birthday card for her friend.  She loved to walk along in the sunshine, enjoying the sweet smell of the roses in her neighbours gardens. It was Spring and people were happily emerging from their little homes after a long cold Winter. Friends waved and shouted greetings along the way and  little dogs happily barked their hello's through picket fences. How wonderful to be alive she thought, she was young, the world was at her feet and life was an adventure to be enjoyed.

Domestic Goddess Monday

The sun is out, the birds are chirping happily in their nests and the children have gone off to school. Every Mothers dream !  A morning coffee and a quick look at the newspaper and it's time for domestic goddess duties !  Housework isn't our most favourite thing to do but it must be done.
Think back to our women ancestors who made do with washboards and scrubbing brushes to wash the clothes each week. Imagine having to boil the old coppa to wash the clothes in and scrubbing the clothes worn by our grubby little boys....No thanks !  I think we are quite spoilt these days by modern technology. I still remember my Grandmother's old washing machine, it still had the old wringer attachment that she had to manually feed the clothes through to wring the water out.

I can really appreciate the hard work done by these women and being an avid lace collector and owner of antique linens, their washing days must have been exhausting. The beautiful marcella quilts I love to have on our bed would have been so heavy to hang on the clothesline.   Something I often use whilst ironing my antique linens is some scented linen water. The smell of rose water on freshly ironed pillowcases is beautiful.

In Victorian times the women would drape their used tea towels over a lavender hedge in the warm sun to dry. The natural oils in the lavender would help to kill the germs and the scent would remain in the tea towel and smell pretty.  Babies cloth nappies were hung out overnight and the moonlight would bleach the stains away.  Try washing your linens in soap flakes disolved in hot water, the smell is so fresh and for those who are allergic it is more gentle on the skin without all of those harsh additives. Adding a few drops of lavender oil to your rinse cycle of your towels will also leave a pretty fragrance.

'Literature and gorgeous illustrations'.........another one of my many loves in life.  Old treasures such as books hold memories of times gone by. As  the reader discards their book off to a dusty corner of their bookcase, the pages stay intact, waiting for another person to come by and be whisked away by their stories.  The stories hold magical tales and beautiful pictures for the eye to drink in....Eye candy for the soul.

I spent a large part of my childhood being whisked away by books. Fairy Tales, Nancy Drew mystery stories were a definate favourite, fiction, non fiction it really didn't matter. I felt at home with a book. I remember begging my Father on a regular basis to take me to the library so I could stock up my collection. I would bring home quite the heavy armfull of books and the stray laminated poster of baby seals or kittens......I loved it ! After a visit to the library I would go into hybernation in my little pink bedroom, hide under the covers  and explore the world of fantasy.  My Mother's old Noddy books and other books she had saved from her childhood  were my favourites. They offered simple tales of friendship, tea parties and princesses, any little girls dream.

I still cannot resist a stack of old books in a flea market, old Enid Blyton titles of faraway lands immediately catapult me back to my little warm bed in my pink bedroom. Timeless memories of yesteryear.
Often books I pick up now from markets have dedications to some dear little child inside the front cover. They have been presented to them at school for a reward for neat work. I love reading these inscriptions, always wondering how excited the child would have been to receive their shiny, new book.

Victorian and even Edwardian books are even more precious and the stories told are just as captivating. These books were written way before anybody had thought of television and computers. The author told tales of amazing adventures for boys and girls even though he/she had probably never experienced these things themself.  Imagination is a wonderful thing and we all possess it in our minds.  Writing a journal, a birthday card etc. is a perfect way to tell others of your innermost thoughts. Something that many people find hard to do these days. Expressing yourself is good for the soul and doing so will show others in years to come just how you felt about your life. A gift in itself. Life is to be treasured, live it to the fullest. Sharing what you have learnt is a valuable treasure for not only yourself, but for your loved ones. Share all that you know and offer it to the world. Life experience is worth more than gold and should never be underestimated.

Treasure Hunting on Sunny Saturday

A favourite place of mine to visit and find lots of pretties is Ambleside Cottage. The lovely Gayle Williams who owns this little store has a passion for sewing bric a brac ,laces, pretty china and mountains of lovely linen. It is very hard to leave without finding another little "must have" !  From the moment you walk up the footpath there are wiry birdcages, turn of the century baby prams, highchairs and then  the pretty lace room jam packed with lace, lace, lace ! Simply divine......
A lovely Saturday afternoon in the sun ,talking to happy people and wandering through little antique stores is my idea of heaven. I am loving the green depression glass in the above photo's, another precious memory of my Grandmother as she owned quite a few pieces of this glass.  Stay tuned for more finds in this beautiful shop in future posts.
You will find Ambleside Cottage at 108 Maitland Road, Islington.  Phone (02) 49621532

Tea for Two with the Prettiest Tea Cups.......Bliss

Tea for two in the late afternoon sun warms the heart.  A cosy daybed on the front porch with big fluffy cushions and some great magazines completes the picture. A cup of tea buys a snippet of peace and quiet and offers time to reflect on the days events. Preparing a pretty tea tray is a joy and if you are fortunate enough to have a friend over to share a tea moment  with, she'll be surprised at that little bit of effort that you have gone to ,to make it all so pretty for her.
Instead of leaving your best tea cups in the display cabinet, use them, they are there to be enjoyed.
 Enjoy your treasures !

The Birthday Cake ......

Close your eyes and take yourself back to when you were 9 years old. It's the morning of your birthday, you wake up and immediately remember that today is going to be special. Today, everyone you meet will be wishing you well and making you feel important. There will be gifts, birthday cake and a special dinner , all in honour of you.
This morning I watched my son enjoy all of these things. The excitement in his eyes was so precious. There was giggling and tearing of the wrapping paper from his birthday gifts, pure joy in his little heart. As a mother we celebrate every day of our childrens lives. They are a blessing and without them life just wouldn't be the same. The birth, first steps, first birthday, first day of school........... This little life we have created is sacred, it is something to enjoy and savour, for soon enough they will be all grown up and making their own way in the world.  So today I drank in the excitement  and watched in delight at what my son was experiencing.  His gift to me was being my son and giving me the honour of watching him grow. Thankyou angels for sending me this amazingly perfect child  xo

Precious pink cupcakes as pictured are found  at High Tea at Fernwood Terrace, The Junction . A yummy place to visit and celebrate your birthday.

The Wings of Angels......

In our life, it is inevitable that we will all lose somebody precious to us. The angels looking down on us just pull a little string and it can all be over in an instant.  Life is the most precious gift we will ever receive and we need to live and love with our whole heart every single day of our life.  We all have dreams of achieving something special in our life so go out and get it, grab it with two hands and run with it.  It is never too late to achieve your wildest dreams.

Once upon a time, I felt quite unhappy with the work I was doing. A co worker seemed to block every piece of good that I tried to achieve and I just didn't want to stay in that situation a minute longer. Not one to make major decisions lightly I surprised myself by throwing my hands in the air and resigning on the spot. Heart beating almost out of my chest I walked home wondering what on Earth I had just done, how would I pay the rent? ,would I get another job quickly ?.  I walked and walked all afternoon thrashing ideas in my head.

I was walking down a hill towards our home when I just threw it out to the universe and said out loud ,"Push me in the direction where I need to be because I really don't know which way to go!". As true as I am sitting here, a flock of kookaburras  flew across the sky and into the tree I was standing under . They were laughing out their boisturous calling cry and it seemed like it was a sign from the heavens. At that moment I knew that I would be ok.  A week later ,I was happily working in another job and discovered I was expecting our first child.  I was over the moon excited at this wonderful news and knew that it was all meant to be. There is a higher plan for us all. Things really do happen for a reason, life has many twists and turns. Life may not always go the way we expect it to, but we must make the most of it whilst we are still standing here on this earth xo

Teacups amongst the flowers.....

There is always the element of surprise in the gardens of Fernwood High Tea. Teacups pop up in unexpected places and not just on the tables as one would expect.  On my last visit I discovered a beautiful timber wheelbarrow full of flowers, bringing cheer to the Autumn surrounds. Among these flowers I noticed the sweetest tea cup and saucer set. I couldn't help but think it had been put there for fairies to drink tea from when they came out at night. My theory was justified when I discovered  the teensiest little fairy door in a pansy patch, just waiting to be opened by the little folk themselves.........
